  • Online calls that actually connect, louder audio, and a security-hardening pass (from a full-app review).
  • Calls
  • Online calls now use a relay when needed. Two phones on different networks (mobile data, different Wi-Fi) couldn't hear each other because a direct connection was blocked. Calls now fall back to a relay so they connect across networks. The audio stays end-to-end encrypted through the relay — it only forwards scrambled packets, it can't listen.
  • Audio is loud by default. Calls now switch to the loudspeaker automatically when they connect, so you actually hear the other person instead of a faint earpiece while looking at the screen. (Tap the speaker button to switch to earpiece; your choice sticks.)
  • You get told when a call can't connect instead of it silently vanishing after a long wait. The "calling…" timeout is shorter (25s), and a message explains what happened.
  • More time to find a connection on slow mobile networks (fixes calls that dropped before they even started), and a stale call can no longer "ghost-ring" you when you reopen a chat.
  • Group calls got the same loudspeaker default, and a fix so a dropped person in the mesh reconnects more reliably.
  • Security (hardening)
  • Firestore security rules are now shipped in the app's repo (firestore.rules) and lock down the important stuff: no one can overwrite your encryption key mid-handshake (which is how an eavesdropper would try to sneak in), and your session's host can't be hijacked. Deploy them with firebase deploy --only firestore:rules.
  • Stronger safety code — the emoji you compare is now 7 symbols instead of 5, so it can't be faked by brute force.
  • The app no longer allows Android to back up its private data, so the anonymous identity can't be lifted off a backup.
  • Polish
  • Faster app start (trimmed the splash delay).
  • The welcome screen can no longer overflow on small screens or large font sizes.
  • Bluetooth "wants to connect" notifications now always clear themselves when the request ends

  • Group conference calling.
  • Group voice calls in a private group, tap the call icon to start (or join) a conference. Everyone in the call connects directly to everyone else (a peer-to-peer "mesh"), so nothing routes through a server. See who's in, mute, switch to speaker, and leave.
  • Still end-to-end encrypted each pair's call setup is sealed with the group's pairwise keys, and the audio itself is encrypted by WebRTC. Nobody in the middle can listen.
  • Reviewed before shipping a multi-agent code review caught and fixed several edge cases: a participant who force-quits now times out instead of ghosting the call, a re-connect no longer re-applies a stale answer, and the mic can't leak if you leave mid-connect.
  • Text only over Bluetooth; conference calls need Wi-Fi / internet. Best with small groups.

  • Private groups, and a link-safety check.
  • Private groups tap "Create private group" for a code; anyone who enters that code in "Enter a code" joins the same group. Group messages are end-to-end encrypted sealed separately for each member, so the server still only stores unreadable ciphertext — and each message shows who sent it. Tap the group title to see who's in. Ephemeral: when the last person leaves, the group is deleted. (Group voice/conference calling is coming next.
  • Link safety if a message contains a link, tapping it shows a warning first ("this could be unsafe") with Cancel / Open anyway, so nothing ever opens by surprise. Applies in every chat.
  • Confirmed: voice calls already have mute and speaker controls (plus End) on the in-call screen.

  • Offline Bluetooth mode talk when there's no Wi-Fi or internet at all.
  • Connect over Bluetooth from the nearby screen, "No Wi-Fi? Connect over Bluetooth" finds other Hush phones over Bluetooth and connects the two directly, with nothing in between. Perfect for the same room with no network.
  • Request → notification → accept when you ask to connect, the other phone gets a notification and an accept / decline screen. Nothing opens until they say yes. (This also confirms notifications work on your device.)
  • Signal quality the chat header shows a live Strong / Good / Weak indicator, so you can tell when you're drifting out of range.
  • Still end-to-end encrypted the same X25519 + XChaCha20 encryption and safety-code check as everywhere else, layered on top of the Bluetooth link.
  • Text only over Bluetooth the radio is too slow for a voice call, so calls still use Wi-Fi / internet.
v1.2.1

Aug 10, 202685 MB2 downloads
  • 1.2.1 — 2026-08-10
  • A polish pass over 1.2.0, from feedback.
  • Cleaner names dropped the emoji. Everyone now gets a clean two-word name like Velvet Truffle, shown in bold with a simple letter monogram avatar.
  • One name everywhere your name is now the same in both code sessions and Nearby mode (it used to show a different random one nearby). A ↻ next to your name on the home screen re-rolls it.
  • New splash the plain white logo-square is gone, replaced by an animated hush wordmark that flows out of the launch screen.
  • Welcome screen a one-time intro on first launch explaining what Hush is (anonymous, encrypted, calls, nearby). It never shows again after that.
  • Instant code your code now appears the moment you open the app. Signing in and saving the session happen quietly in the background instead of making you wait.

  • 1.2.0 — 2026-08-10
  • Big update: private voice calls, a name for every session, real end-to-end encryption, a serverless nearby mode, and a faster start.
  • Voice calls — tap the call icon to talk. Calls are peer-to-peer and encrypted; the other person gets an incoming-call screen with accept/decline, and in-call you can mute or switch to speaker. (Works while both people have the chat open; ~free using public STUN, so a small fraction of calls behind very strict mobile networks may not connect.)
  • Nearby mode (same Wi-Fi, no internet) — "Talk to someone nearby" finds other Hush devices on your Wi-Fi and opens a fully serverless, end-to-end-encrypted chat + call straight between the two phones. Nothing touches the internet or any server. (Needs both phones on the same, non-isolated Wi-Fi.)
  • Session names — everyone gets a playful throwaway name for the session (🫐 Blueberry, 🍭 Lollipop, 🧁 Cupcake…). You see who you're talking to, and how you appear to them. Names vanish when the session ends.
  • End-to-end encryption — messages and call setup are sealed on your device (X25519 + XChaCha20-Poly1305). The server only ever stores unreadable ciphertext. A safety code (5 emoji) lets you confirm no one is intercepting — compare it, or read it aloud on a call.
  • Faster startup — a branded splash instead of a blank white screen, and the connect screen appears instantly (you can start typing a code to join before your own code has finished generating).
